Always Find Your 'Why' When Making Big Changes

Having read the best selling book from Simon Sinek (available here), I decided to kick off this blog by answering two critical examples of asking why when it comes to starting any business:

  • Why does your company exist?
  • Why should people care?

So why was EcoShoots founded & why should people care?

Having had my first child recently, a little girl named Riley, I became acutely aware of future planning and ensuring my wife and I give her the best possible start in life.

You start thinking of the usual things, such as ensuring she is healthy, well educated and financially sound. Then it also hit me, the world she was born into is very much in trouble environmentally. This could be a massive threat to her and future generations.

This threat comes from multiple angles and isn’t a one problem issue that can be solved overnight. From climate change to ocean plastic and deforestation, the damage currently being done to our planet is happening on an enormous scale, every single day.

Animals and marine life are being decimated in unthinkable percentages. And the majority of our society sleepwalk through the daily grind, barely aware or giving it a second thought.

Climate change aside, our consumer-led society is addicted to disposable products and single-use plastics. Both consumer and corporations shoulder the blame, in my opinion.

Corporations should be looking to move to zero waste and eliminate single-use plastics in products and packaging. At the same time, consumers should be voting with their wallet/purse and shunning those that are not embracing the change that desperately needs to happen.

Alas, it is not all doom and gloom. There is a growing movement hoping to reverse this damage and preserve the natural beauty of this planet.

What can we do about it?

start with why

EcoShoots, as a company is hoping to make a small difference and contribute to a global clean up.

We hope to encourage a change of attitude towards the everyday items that we use without a second thought.

We are going to create a more extensive range of sustainably produced, non-plastic products that reduce reliance on single-use items and contribution to landfills.

Also, via this blog, we will be passing on valuable information that we learn and discover along the way. We hope this inspires many people to take action.

When profitable, we will also be donating 10% of all net profits to worthy environmental causes to help contribute to some of the great charities out there battling to rescue our planet from ruin.

This contribution may not be millions of pounds, but we genuinely believe that if everyone can make small changes in their habits and lives and contribute in a small way to solving the problem, then we as a species can turn this around.

We owe it to our children and future generations to at least try.

“It is not logic or facts but our hopes and dreams, our hearts and our guts, that drives us to try new things.”
